Berlin's distinctive buildings offer a glimpse into the city's history. St. Nicholas' Church in the heart of Berlin-Mitte is often considered the cradle of the city, as it was completed in 1230, coinciding with the founding of Berlin.

The Nikolai Quarter, just a short walk from Alexanderplatz, is considered the oldest part of the city. However, the current buildings are largely modern and were rebuilt by the GDR after reunification until 1987. Historical figures like the sculpture "Eckensteher Nante" (Corner Stander Nante) shape the memory of bygone times, but cannot disguise the loss of the original character.

The Babylon Cinema, built in 1929 by the renowned architect Hans Poelzig, is another example of the city's impressive architecture. The building combines a cinema and a theater and remains an important cultural hub.

In contrast, the Ribbeck House on Museum Island is a historic residential building, considered one of the oldest in Berlin. This ensemble was built as early as 1624 and is a rare remnant of the residential culture from that era.

Another important historical building is the Nicolaihaus on Brüderstraße. It played a central role during the Berlin Enlightenment and is one of the few Baroque houses that have survived to this day. It is now managed by the German Foundation for Monument Protection.

The Admiralspalast, which had its main entrance in the rear courtyard in 1910, was once a grand ice skating rink. Since then, the palace has transformed into one of Berlin's most famous revue theaters and still attracts many visitors today.
